FEAR AND HUNGER

I sleep in a loft bed. I have since I was 9 or 10 years old. A fear that spawned for me was the fear that everything under my line of sight on the bed no longer existed. That if I looked over the edge, my floor would be gone and I would fall into the dark hole. I knew it probably was wrong. But that spread to outside my door, because what if my family was gone now? I would sneak out of my room to look at my parents in bed sometimes, just to prove to myself they were ok. I also did that with my baby sister (at the time she was a baby). It was some of the earliest existential thoughts I remember really struggling with. I wpuld also, like you, worry about a monster on the side I couldn't see. I've always had my bed against a wall. The position I sleep in comes in cycles however, and when I slept facing the wall, I would worry. I'm not sure when that fear faded away but it hasn't bothered me in some time.

I didn't expect to recognize any game on here, but I have heard of Bramble! And it's purely because I saw 2 posts on Reddit months apart of the same early footage of the scene at 19:48 with people asking what game it was and if it came out. Now I know more about it! And it looks really cool.

It's amazing that so much random things came together for this game to be made. What a fucking gem. 😂

Jacob Geller's just been absolutely killing it with the titles of his videos, jesus.

I judge the size of a game's space as how much of it is fully explorable. Ignoring procedurally generated games, the biggest games are the ones with the most fleshed-out buildings and little bits and pieces around every corner, any empty space makes sense to be empty. The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Watch Dogs, even things like Roblox and Minecraft building showcases with intricately, intimately decorated interiors are all larger than any game with so many cardboard box buildings, you're genuinely surprised when you can go inside one at random. The ability to just wander, get lost, feel like you're digitally touring a recreation of a real place, being able to just pretend you're an NPC going through the motions. Big maps are great and all, but it means nothing in terms of actual space if you can't somewhat pretend to live there.

I don't suppose you've heard of Flipside? It was a mod for Half-life 2 and a 2d platformer all about flipping the camera 180 degrees

great essay as always, jacob. watched it on nebula yesterday and have been thinking about your concluding statements since then. maybe it's less hidden in the dark lately due to having a light shone on it by nitrorad a few months ago, but the one game that (to me) felt like it lived in the dark was SWOLLEN TO BURSTING UNTIL I AM DISAPPEARING ON PURPOSE. i can't emphasize enough how long that game will live in my head for years to come. deeply beautiful, full of equal amounts of charm and horror, and disarmingly earnest and raw. i feel like it could have slipped into the list of games you discussed in this video without any friction. i hope you get a chance to check it out someday.

That White Shadows ending sounds like speculation bait. It likely means absolutely nothing at all but has some artsy-fartsy faux symbolism intended to make people think they just experienced something meaningful and deliberate, but really it was just made so youtubers can make video essays about it and drive more people toward the game. Unfortunately White Shadow isn't a game I'd be able to play. I struggle with Black and White monochrome visuals since they tend to give me a headache. I think my brain wants to add color to them so it starts to.

I feel like Abes Oddysee must be an inspiration for White Shadows - Much of the game is takes place in a similar mega factory and shares those ambitious scene rotations exposing a full 360 view in some cases.
